As the end of 1980 drew nearer followers of the Deltic locomotives knew one more of the class was scheduled to be withdrawn. 55003 (D9003) "MELD" and 55010 (D9010) "THE KING'S OWN SCOTTISH BORDERER" were both awaiting the call to works for Intermediate overhaul and it was certain one of these locomotives would be the next withdrawal. The outcome saw 55010 saved to continue service until the end of 1981 whilst 55003 was not so lucky and became the third Deltic to be withdrawn.
Here the poor external condition of 55010 is seen whilst waiting departure from Cleethorpes with the 1A21 13:13 service for King's Cross on the 18th August 1980. 55010 would work a few more services before its call to works for repair ten days later on the 28th, whilst 55003 worked to the end of the year until withdrawal on the 30th December.
