55012 (D9012) "CREPELLO" under electrical test at Doncaster Works on 27th August 1980. Up until the mid 1980's the electrical capacity of the the Locomotive Test House was adequate, in that it could handle one Deltic, two class 37's, two class 31's, or permutations there of, but with the arrival of the Class 56's (also type 5) extra capacity was required. Whilst an extension was built and alterations made some loco's were tested in the Crimpsall Yard, coupled to a type 'ZP' resistor wagon, and 55012 can be seen being so treated. It was the beginning of a period where there was an ongoing intermittent fault on 55012. This was finally traced by Denis Edwards, a Kings Cross division riding inspector, after No.12 had written off several main generators and traction motors over about three month period. It was found that at high speed, when crossing junctions the motor contactors were opening under load (due to faulty wiring), with a resultant large bang and no amps.
