On Sunday 18th March 1979 550014 (D9014) "THE DUKE OF WELLINGTON'S REGIMENT" is seen at York with the 1Z72 11:25 Edinburgh - Birmingham charter at York. 55014 came off at York and the adjacent 40034 was waiting to work forward. 1Z72 had run via Carlisle as the day previous had seen the Penmanshiel tunnel disaster, which saw disruption to the ECML for the following five months. It is interesting to note that 40034 was the only steam heat loco available at York this day and had it not have been available 1Z72, crewed with York men, would have gone forward to Birmingham with the Deltic. Even more bizarre would have been the trains extension to Bristol, which was undertaken with the York crew conducting on the loco.
