Having been relieved of the 1S77 23:55 King's Cross - Aberdeen, "The Night Scotsman" at York on the previous night, due to boiler failure, 55014 is seen restricted to ETH only at Arlesey with the 1A08 08:07 York - King's Cross service on 31st October 1981. Boiler repairs would follow later in the day on its return to York, however, troubles continued into early November and a traction motor failure led to the locomotives withdrawal only twenty-one days later, 55014 donating one of its power units (officially both of them) to 55002 (D9002) "THE KING'S OWN YORKSHIRE LIGHT INFANTRY" at Stratford Works in late November/early December.
