On the 5th February 1981, former Gateshead machine, 55014 (D9014) "THE DUKE OF WELLINGTON'S REGIMENT" traverses the only single line section of the ECML as it powers the 1G65 12:40 Aberdeen - Edinburgh through Usan, near Montrose. 55014 had earlier worked north via the 1A23 08:55 Edinburgh - Aberdeen and would return to Aberdeen again later in the day at the head of 1A51 17:00 Edinburgh - Aberdeen, finally venturing south with the 1E48 21:20 Aberdeen - King's Cross sleeper as far as York.
