| 4 - | Doncaster Works. |
| 5 - | Released from Doncaster Works. 0B01 Doncaster - King's Cross. 1S77 23:20 King's Cross - Edinburgh, to Peterborough (17 minute delay Peterborough - 1971 forward 06/02). Casualty report states: Flashover No.1 main generator - engine shut down & unable to restart. Driver L Lincoln (Kin's Cross) reports: Flashover on No.1 main generator at Welwyn Garden City (both engines remained running). Closed controller inspected engine room for damage and fire, proceeded at reduced power. No.1 engine stopped at idling speed at Abbotts Ripton for no apparent reason and would not start again. 222 miles since last classified repair (05.02.70). Conclusions: 11.02.70 DME KX states: As this was the locomotives first working since Classified Repair no doubt the CM&EE will pursue the matter with BREL. Peterborough TMD. Locomotive taken out of traffic - for works attention. Shopping proposal states: Traction motors to be cleaned and copper swarf to be removed. |
| 6 - | |
| 7 - | To Doncaster Works - Rectification. All traction motors to be cleaned and copper swarf removed - all traction motors were replaced. |

| 9 - | Released from Doncaster Works. |
| 10 - | 1S70 22:15 King's Cross - Aberdeen, to Peterborough (24
minute delay Peterborough - 1514 forward). Casualty report states: No.1 engine shut down. 500 miles since last classified repair (05.02.70). Conclusions: 29.04.70 DME KX states: This locomotive had been released from Doncaster Works only five days earlier from Classified Repair. It was in intermittent trouble with this defect and the subject of intensive investigation by CM&EE representatives for about a further three weeks after this casualty. The trouble was finally cured when the lubricating oil pump was changed on the 10th March, the defective pump being returned to Works under the 'Red Label' procedure. |
| 11 - | (0D01 Peterborough - Doncaster). Doncaster TMD. 'A' exam. 1N42 23:55 King's Cross - Newcastle, to York (50 minute delay York - 252 forward 12/02). Casualty report states: Brake trouble - brakes dragging only 18" vacuum. 800 miles since last classified repair (05.02.70). |
| 12 - | York TMD. Repairs - limiting valve & snifter incorrectly set (valve set to 21" Hg & snifter to operate at 22" Hg). |
| 13 - | 1N06 07:55 King's Cross - Newcastle, to Peterborough (17
minute delay Peterborough - 1997 forward). Casualty report states: No.1 engine shut down - suspect defective lubricating oil thermostatic by-pass valve. Driver S Roethenbaugh (King's Cross) reports: When leaving King's Cross Loco the boiler pressure was at maximum, after coupling to train and leaving King's Cross the pressure dropped back to approx 30lbs/inch². My Secondman endeavoured to raise pressure but as soon as he had opened the main steam valve the pressure dropped back to 30lbs again and would not build up. After closing the controller to reduce speed to 70mph at Offord No.1 engine stopped (fault light went dim). My Secondman topped header tank up and noticed there was a lub oil leak on No.1 engine near the boiler. This, coupled to the fact that we could only get low pressure on the boiler and it being a severely cold morning I whistled for a replacement locomotive at Peterborough. 1,250 miles since last classified repair (05.02.70). Conclusions: 24.03.70 DME KX states: After release from Main Works Classified Repair on 5th February this locomotive gave intermittent trouble on several occasions due to No.1 engine shutting down. The lubricating oil thermostatic by-pass valve was changed on the advice of a CM&EE representative. However, the engine continued to give trouble and eventually the lubricating oil pump had to be renewed. |
| 14 - | To Doncaster Works - Rectification. No.1 power unit 430 continually shutting down - low oil pressure was rectified and lubricating oil thermostatic by-pass valve was replaced. Released from Doncaster Works. |
| s15 - | King's Cross Loco. 'A' exam. 1S79 23:35 King's Cross - Edinburgh, to Newcastle (18 minute delay Hett Mill - 1990 forward 16/02). Casualty report states: No.1 engine cutting out (suspect faulty lub oil thermostat). 1,700 miles since last classified repair (05.02.70). Conclusions: 19.02.70 DME KX states: Due to repeated bookings and no fault found in this instance, arrangements were made for locomotive to work 14:30 Newcastle - York with CM&EE representatives riding on footplate. Report received after trial run that the lub oil thermostat was faulty - locomotive worked to Finsbury Park for rectification. |
| 16 - | Gateshead TMD. Repairs - no fault found (loco to be accompanied in traffic on 14:30 Newcastle - York). xxxx 14:30 Newcastle - York. CM&EE engineer on footplate - faulty thermostat diagnosed. (0B02 York - Finsbury Park). Finsbury Park TMD. Repairs - lub oil thermostat renewed. |

| 23 - | 1L03 07:45 King's Cross - Bradford, to Leeds (24 late at
Leeds). Casualty report states: No.1 engine cut out, complete loss of power when running - slight flashover damage on both main generators. Holbeck TMD. Repairs - flashover damage repaired, No.1 engine underspeed governor drive renewed, engine speeds re-set after trial run with CM&EE and Napier representatives in attendance. 3,100 miles since last classified repair (05.02.70) - 131,000 stated. Conclusions: 25.03.70 DME KX states: I note the cause and repairs stated by the DME Leeds, but I would also point out that this locomotive gave considerable trouble with No.1 engine cutting out after Classified Repair on 05.02.70. In addition to the repairs quoted above the lubricating oil thermostatic by-pass valve and lubricating oil pump were both changed before the defects were apparently rectified. |
| 24 - | |
| 25 - | 3Axx 17:35 (Norwich Division) - King's Cross (19 minute
delay - 5667 forward). Casualty report states: Boiler defect - locomotive light to home depot for repairs. Report is hard to decipher - what looks like Class 3 17:35 KM-KX 9015 was removed at KM and 5667 forward TCR issued by Norwich Division. 4,700 miles since last classified repair (05.02.70). 0B02 (Norwich Division) - Finsbury Park. Finsbury Park TMD. Repairs - unable to fault. |
| 26 - | Possible failure with 1S17 at York - see 04.03.70. |
| 27 - | |
| 28 - | To Doncaster Works - Unclassified repair. No.1 power unit 430 continually shutting down - lubricating oil radiators were cleaned and thermostats replaced. |

| 3 - | Doncaster Works. |
| 4 - | Released from Doncaster Works. 0B01 Doncaster - King's Cross. 1S17 10:00 King's Cross - Edinburgh, "The Flying Scotsman" (22 minute delay York). Casualty report states: No.1 engine continually cutting out and boiler defective. 6,000 miles since last classified repair (05.02.70). Conclusions: 25.03.70 DME KX states: I understand that the CM&EE 's Technical staff were involved in the investigation of this casualty and that the locomotive was subsequently returned to Works. I would draw attention to the fact that considerable trouble with No.1 engine intermittently cutting out was experienced until a replacement lubricating oil pump was fitted on 09.03.70. As no Works visit is recorded after this casualty there are a number of scenarios possible; a) casualty was dated incorrectly and should be 26.02.70 (9014 was 1S17 27/02 & 9021 was 1S17 28/02). b) date is correct and Works visit not recorded with the new oil pump fitted at Doncaster rather than Finsbury Park on 09.03.70 - though 9015 was off exam at FP 10.03.70. c) DME KX was not given full facts by reporting DME Leeds division and no Works visit made with locomotive returning to home depot for repairs on 09.03.70 - no forward engine recorded. |

Casualty report states: Loss of power - wheel slip relay (WSR 3) operated and then would not release. 27,500 miles since last classified repair (05.02.70). Conclusions: 07.05.70 DME KX states: This locomotive was accompanied in service by technical staff following this casualty but the fault could not be made to occur again and to date there have been no further reports of trouble. Gateshead TMD. Repairs - wheel slip relay thoroughly examined and tested when the relay held in once more (no apparent cause). The relay was then operated manually several times and tested once more satisfactorily. |

- 9010 fwd). Casualty report states: High water temperature - no loss of coolant found. 57,673 miles since last classified repair (05.02.70). Conclusions: 22.06.70 DME KX states: The radiators of this class of locomotive are barely adequate during the hottest weather and a combination of sections blanked out with Araldite, bolting up of engine room windows, plus some slight deposits of dirt can lead to high water temperature faults. On the day of this casualty ambient temperatures were above 80°F. Doncaster TMD. Locomotive returned to home depot for attention. (0B02 Doncaster - Finsbury Park). Finsbury Park TMD.
