On what is believed to be Sunday 27th August 1972 9016 "GORDON HIGHLANDER" is seen stranded at Berwick with an exhaust collector drum fire. The loco is seen in charge of the 1E13 13:00 Edinburgh - King's Cross and the fire brigade are already in attendance...

...Prone to exhaust fires, due to excessive two-stroke oil in the collector drums, the Deltics were quite often attended by various fire brigades and on Sunday 27th August 1972, it is the turn of the Berwick on Tweed division to extinguish a fire in 9016 "GORDON HIGHLANDER" whilst powering the 1E13 13:00 Edinburgh - King's Cross service. The date of this occurrence has been narrowed down to Sunday 27th August because it is known 9016 entered Doncaster Works for repairs to this fire on the 30th August and 1E13 was an unidentified Deltic (1 late at Grantham) on the 28th and a class 47 on the 29th & 30th August. It is also known that this particular photographers previous photos were of a railtour from Edinburgh on the 26th August.
