With its work nearly done 55017 (D9017) "THE DURHAM LIGHT INFANTRY" rests inside the fuelling shed at Haymarket TMD on the 30th December 1981. 55017 arrived at Edinburgh, for the last time, via 1S12 05:50 King's Cross - Aberdeen and would return south that night with the 1E48 21:20 Aberdeen - King's Cross service. The following day - it's final day in service - 55017 would have the honour of leaving King's Cross with the final Deltic hauled passenger service, the 1L44 16:03 King's Cross - York, which sadly it only worked as far as Grantham due to a broken rail.
