Having been too late for a Heavy General Repair (HGR) 55018 (D9018) "BALLYMOSS"
is seen in the dismantling shop at Doncaster Works, on Sunday 17th July
1977, with the legend "INTER" chalked on the side, denoting its
pending Intermediate overhaul.
HGR's had ceased earlier in the year following the decision to withdraw the
class from service sooner than originally expected. This would be 55018's
final Intermediate overhaul and would see certain characteristics altered,
including the plating over of the route indicators which became redundant in
1974 following the cessation of four character headcodes. Cost was the
largest factor that saw the class cut-back on repairs and even the plating
over of route indicators would cease at Doncaster by 1979. 55018 had arrived
for repair at Doncaster on the 30th June and would not return to service
until the 10th of December.
