Time was fast running out for 55001 (D9001) "ST. PADDY" when seen above at Doncaster Works during November 1979. By this time other members of the class, which had seen lengthy periods of time out of service at the works awaiting power units, had finally seen repairs sanctioned and been returned to service. By this time only 55004 (D9004) "QUEEN'S OWN HIGHLANDER" and 55020 (D9020) "NIMBUS" were awaiting units along with 55001. 55004 was actually given repairs in November, and it appeared both 55001 and 55020 would also re-enter service soon after. Unfortunately the man-hours required and cost of 55004's return to service proved non-viable and repairs to 55001 and 55020 were cancelled...

...55001 and 55020 were condemned in December 1979 and officially withdrawn in early January 1980. No further time was wasted in processing the locomotives and both were cut up by February 1980. This view of 55001, in November 1979, saw the locomotive still affixed with its nameplates, though little else remained as most had been robbed in favour of other members of the fleet.
