1 - Condition of locomotive following Classified Repair report states: 04.03.76-22.04.76 at various depots,
various cab & engine room doors booked, wont stay shut & required draught proofing, locks & catches
adjusted, wooden frames repaired & draught strips renewed. Theses doors are still being booked to date
01.05.76 - doors have been checked whilst in depot with crow bars to see if they will open but wont open
unless smashing the lock assembly. Suspect twisting of frame work whilst running at speeds causes doors
to jump catches causing doors to open.

Conclusions: 29.07.76 DME KX states: The defective component has been forwarded under
'Red Label' procedure - in view of the fact that this was an intermittent defect & I am satisfied
that the boiler was working correctly on departure from King's Cross, I do not consider that
the fitter who investigated the previous reported defect can be held at fault.

Conclusions: 01.07.76 DME KX states: The loco was subsequently checked in traffic and found
that No.2 engine was suspect aerating, locomotive was taken out of traffic and sent to Doncaster
Works, but Works unable to fault engine after checking on load bank. This locomotive was
released to traffic on 16th June but after working from Doncaster to Hull was again reported as
No.2 engine shutting down. It was returned to Doncaster Depot for investigation where the fault
was found to be a defective water level switch, which was changed.

welded and a four-hour load test on No.2 power unit 409 revealed no defect.

Conclusions: 21.09.76 DME KX states: Failures of these pipes continues to become one of the
more common sources of Deltic locomotive failures - although I understand that arrangements
have been made for them to be subjected to annealing at Main Works Repairs, this has not
completely cured the trouble.
