The end to a great machine - the final death throes of 55020 (D9020) "NIMBUS" are seen at the rear of Doncaster Works on the 15th January 1980. The removal of the bodysides is in process after which only the frames would remain for disposal. Debris from the locomotive in the foreground includes engine room and cab windows and cab seats. 55020 was the first Deltic to be scrapped, the second 55001 (D9001) "ST. PADDY" followed only days later, both had been out of service at Doncaster Works since early 1978.
