...Journey's end: On 3rd January 1981 55002 rests at King's Cross buffer stops having brought in the 1A04 07:00 service from Hull. The 1A04 was an untitled service on Saturdays and Sundays, however, as it was the final week of locomotive operation on both the 1A04 and 1D04 trains the "Hull Executive" headboard was fittingly carried. There was no Sunday 1A04 service and as of Monday 5th January these diagrams passed over to HST operation.

To up slow. Dead stand then to up fast. |
This run was of course that of the last up Hull Executive, and although in no way an all-time great run, it’s interesting from this point of view alone. The running from Hull to Doncaster was beset by delays and we actually eased us out of platform 1 and set sail for Retford about 25 minutes down. We ran fast to Retford with 103 at Ranskill, the start-to-stop from Donny being only 14mins 21. But with signals in the Bathley Lane area we took 17mins 22 to pass Newark from Retford, a time normally bettered start-to-stop. No 2 recovered well over the Trent Valley to Peascliffe with 101 at Hougham falling off to just 97 on the 1 in 200 to the tunnel. After Grantham and presumably ‘out of path’, things got off to a bad start with a visit to the up slow and a dead stand, all before Stoke Tunnel. The run to The Cross, tabulated, was competent though in truth, given the arrears of around 30 minutes leaving Grantham, disappointing. I suppose some drivers are ‘runners’ and some not. However, KOYLI’s minimum of 99mph at Stevenage after the climb through Hitchin and 101 climbing to Potter’s Bar was a show of Napier strength which no timidity up front could disguise.
