By the start of May 1979 King's Cross Passenger Loco, the fuelling,
maintenance and stabling area adjacent to the station, had closed, however,
special dispensation was granted for 55003 (D9003) "MELD" to stable there
prior to the inaugural run of the retimed "The Hull Executive" service on
the 14th ay 1979 - thus making sure that the locomotive was in the station and
ready for departure on time. Here the locomotive awaits the move to the station
- it was the last time King's Cross Loco was used...

waits for departure from King's Cross with the 1D04 17:05 King's Cross -
Hull "The Hull Executive" on the first day of the service's
rescheduled timings. "The Hull Executive" was a replacement of
the former "The Hull Pullman" from May 1978 though initially was
only booked to be Deltic hauled on the up service to King's Cross (1A04 06:50
ex-Hull). From May 1979, however, the down "The Hull Executive"
service also saw booked Deltic traction after it was re-timed making it the
fastest diesel hauled service in the country with an average speed of 91.3 mph
between King's Cross and its first stop at Retford...
