The following day, the 28th October, was actually 55004's last in service, it successfully worked the 1M53 07:49 York - Liverpool and 1E98 12:05 Liverpool - York return on one power unit, however, the following 1M76 15:50 York - Liverpool was in trouble with high water temp at Manchester. A decision to withdraw 55004 and donate its good unit to 55008 (D9008) "THE GREEN HOWARDS" was undertaken whilst at Liverpool, and it was decided 55004 should return dead in tow behind 55011 (D9011) "THE ROYAL NORTHUMBERLAND FUSILIERS" on the 1E89 20:40 Liverpool - York service, the driver of which refusing to have 55004 in the consist due to safety reasons, saw 55004 remain at Liverpool overnight, finally returning behind 31405 as a light engine move on the 29th October.
