An extremely busy scene at Newark Northgate on the 4th July 1981 sees 55004 (D9004) "QUEENS OWN HIGHLANDER" depart for York with the 1L42 12:05 service from King's Cross. It would appear engineers have possession of the 'up' main and therefore platform No.3 was being used for all services south - note the DMU waiting in the wings for a platform once the HST has cleared. Two HST services were due at Newark around the time of 1L42, which was booked to stop 13:50/13:52; 1A17 12:50 Leeds - King's Cross was booked to pass at 13:49, presuming that this is a stopping service it could well be the 1A18 12:35 Hull - King's Cross (due 14:00/14:02) which until the start of the summer 1981 timetable had been booked for Deltic traction...

...55004 gets the 1L42 away from Newark - note the HST is still present adding fuel to the fire that it is indeed the 1A18 - thus presuming still further that the 1L42 was running approximately 10 down on this particular occasion.
