Although on the decline since May 1978 Deltic supremacy, on the ECML, finally ended on the 12th May 1979 when 55005 (D9005) "THE PRINCE OF WALES OWN REGIMENT OF YORKSHIRE" hauled the final loco hauled 1S17 09:00 King's Cross - Edinburgh service. 55005 worked the service as far as Newcastle and is seen here at York adorned with a small headboard denoting the last loco hauled 1S17. However, all was not lost for Deltic devotees - as from the 14th May the re-timed 1D04 17:05 King's Cross - Hull "The Hull Executive" became regularly Deltic hauled and for the next 18 months was the fastest loco hauled service in the country.
