Due to either a lack of HST units, or failure, on the 12th December 1981 the 1E13 10:25 Aberdeen - King's Cross HST service was given to Deltic 55008 (D9008) "THE GREEN HOWARDS". The locomotive worked ECS from Edinburgh to Montrose where the train was turned as insufficient time was available to reach Aberdeen. 55008 is seen at Montrose, York Road sidings, waiting to work forward to Edinburgh...

...Shortly afterwards 55008 (D9008) "THE GREEN HOWARDS" waits at Montrose station with the 1E13 vice HST service for King's Cross which the locomotive worked as far as Edinburgh. No doubt 55008 had given patrons aboard the 1Z55 Edinburgh - Aberdeen "Grampian Deltic" railtour, behind 55009 (D9009) "ALYCIDON", quite a surprise as the two services passed at Montrose.
