1967-1968 Winter Diagrams
Only minor changes to the
summer timetable were introduced for the commencement of the winter service.
Most notably the Gateshead duty No.1/2 roster. The Gateshead and Haymarket (but
not Clarence Yard) Saturday and Sunday duties were all renumbered for the winter
period, so that the locomotive working duty No.1 on Friday was Duty No.1 on
Saturday and so non through the week. The progression as far as actual trains
were concerned was unaltered, with one exception, the two Gateshead locomotives
working 08:00 and 08:07 ex-Edinburgh on Monday mornings interchanged.

Deltic diagrams for the winter period were altered on February 5th giving Clarence Yard six daily rosters (including Sundays), all for air braked locomotives, these being the high speed Leeds, Bradford and Newcastle trains. Thus all converted locomotives were concentrated on Finsbury Park. Whilst Gateshead and Haymarket duties were reduced to five each, these all non-air braked. Thus giving a reserve of six locomotives for repairs, maintenance, failures and necessary stand-by duties for air braked services. Since November 1967 at least one locomotive (usually D9007 "PINZA" or D9016 "GORDON HIGHLANDER") had been on more or less permanent release from normal duties for crew training and running-in of air-braked stock.
With the reduction of Deltic diagrams the following services became type 4 haulage:
01:00 (MX) King's Cross -
Newcastle.
18:05 (SuO) King's Cross - Newcastle.
12:00 (SuO) King's Cross - Edinburgh.
09:00 (SuO) Newcastle - King's Cross.
22:50 (SuO) Edinburgh - King's Cross.
23:14 Newcastle - King's Cross.
23:55 King's Cross - Newcastle.
20:20 Newcastle - King's Cross.
An unusual feature of the new diagrams was that the workings were on an 'out and in' basis, whereby the same locomotive would work the same service on a consecutive number of days instead of the more complex rosters which operated in the summer of 1967. Noteworthy was the fact that King's Cross - Leeds trains were booked for Clarence Yard (Finsbury Park) engines only - no Gateshead locomotives were booked for the route and the sole Haymarket working to Leeds was a Sunday only 09:40 ex-King's Cross and 16:50 return.
Further amendments to services were made during April 1968: Air-braked stock was introduced on the two "Talisman" services and four of the five Gateshead diagrams were taken over by air-braked locomotives. It was expected that by the start of the new summer timetable all locomotives would have been converted and the diagrams in operation the previous summer would be reinstated.
