Casualty report states: ETH defective - driver uncoupled locomotive from train at Hatfield and could not fault locomotive. Driver Harrison (King's Cross) reports: ETH was perfect on shed and was no trouble until Wood Green, when it shut down, repeated attempts to start it failed. There was a speed restriction at Hatfield (20 mph) so I decided to stop the engine in the platform and inform control. Whilst I went to phone I told my secondman to uncouple the leads and try the engine on its own and it worked well. I had a fresh engine at Peterborough and had no further trouble. 25,840 miles since last classified repair (25.11.71). Conclusion: 08.02.72 DME KX states: I can only assume that this was due to earth fault leakage on the coaching stock causing operation of the power earth fault relay on the locomotive. Locomotive to works for attention. 120,500 miles since last classified repair (25.11.72). Conclusions: 19.07.72 DME KX states: I am advised by DME Leeds that the main generator caused the bogie fire due to flame passing through the air vent under the generator and affecting the under-structure, as a result of the underframe being dirty due to oil contamination. Such a serious failure of a main generator is unusual and no doubt the CM&EE will follow up with BREL regarding results of inspection on strip down. York TMD. Locomotive taken out of traffic - awaiting works attention. |
