There was a speed restriction at Hatfield (20 mph) so I decided to stop the engine in the platform and inform control. Whilst I went to phone I told my secondman to uncouple the leads and try the engine on its own and it worked well. I had a fresh engine at Peterborough and had no further trouble. 25,840 miles since last classified repair (25.11.71). Conclusion: 08.02.72 DME KX states: I can only assume that this was due to earth fault leakage on the coaching stock causing operation of the power earth fault relay on the locomotive. Conclusions: 19.07.72 DME KX states: I am advised by DME Leeds that the main generator caused the bogie fire due to flame passing through the air vent under the generator and affecting the under-structure, as a result of the underframe being dirty due to oil contamination. Such a serious failure of a main generator is unusual and no doubt the CM&EE will follow up with BREL regarding results of inspection on strip down. York TMD.
