PT Wragg (CM&EE York) riding. Purpose of trip: Check on reported bad oil leak from No.2 engine phasing gear case (proposal for shopping 31.12.73). 375 tons, No.1 cab in use, weather Fine. Report states:
No.1 engine; oil leaking from plug at rear of main lub oil filter (C bank) - flakes of metal noted on top of No.1 engine/generator, below the auxiliary generator drive, although no actual flaking of metal was observed.
No.2 engine; oil leaking from rear of main lub oil filter (A bank) - suspect mounting flange joint. A bank fuel rack reading scale hanging off one screw.
Electrical system: satisfactory.
Body & Bogies; weld fracture between drivers side front windows in No.2 cab.
ETH; satisfactory.
Comments & General Remarks; Re Mr. D Edwards report 27.12.73 - No wheelslip indications were noted at a speed of 90 mph, no lub oil was observed to be leaking from the region of the lub oil bypass valve. The performance of the loco was satisfactory. When hot the oil pressure, at idling, of No.1 engine (427) was 29 psi but no indication of engine shutdown due to this experienced or reported in the defect book. No excessive oil leakage was noted from No.2 engine phasing gear case - reported to Regional Control at end of journey.

As with this fault at beginning of the year it is assumed the loco was accompanied in traffic during the next day and the shopping proposal cancelled, as no works visit exists until No.2 engine threw a con-rod at the end of March.

Conclusions: 25.03.74 DME KX states: No repairs were carried out at the time but burner motor subsequently changed at Finsbury Park and defective machine forwarded to Doncaster Works for inspection under the 'Red Label' procedure. I am treating this casualty as Non-mechanical. No doubt the DME Leeds will follow up with his Control Organisation regarding misuse of the locomotive.

Locomotive worked forward on No.1 engine only as there was no alternative power available - it is understood on arrival at Newcastle it was found that one engine connecting rod was fractured, possibly due to a piston seizure).
08.04.74 Driver M Howdle (York) reports: Re the working off 55012 on 1N28 22.03.74; the train was 12 minutes late away owing to late arrival of 55012 and No.2 engine shutting down. After three attempts to start and King's Cross Control being advised, the train was worked by 55012 on instructions of Control (no ETH loco was available at KX). I was told an ETH loco would be provided en-route but it was not - 55012 worked train to York and through to Newcastle.

Conclusions: 16.05.74 DME KX states: The radiators to these locomotives are in run down condition and any slight internal blockage can result in the engine overheating. It is considered that a campaign change of all radiators should be made at an early date before the advent of the hot weather.

The trouble was eventually traced to an intermittent defect on coach SO6141. Will you therefore cancel the traction casualty reports.

Conclusions: 14.01.75 DME KX states: The previous inspection of these contacts would have been carried out during Classified Repair. A check on the locomotives repair history reveals that on 29th November it was necessary to renew the No.2 load regulator control valve 'O' rings due to bad lubricating oil leakage and I can only assume that the lubricating oil may have affected the contacts.

Casualty report states: unable to regain power when attempting to restart from check at Finsbury Park - driver shut down No.2 engine & proceeded on one engine to Peterborough (No.2 load regulator contacts out of adjustment).

Conclusions: 14.01.75 DME KX states: Please see previous casualty two days earlier. On that occasion the replacement contacts had been fitted at King's Cross Passenger Loco as due to shortage of locomotives and enginemen, it was not possible to arrange for the locomotive to go to Finsbury Park Depot without incurring a delay in traffic. This meant that the contacts were fitted without the aid of the setting gauge. I am therefore unable to hold any staff at fault.
