D9005 was the first Deltic to traverse the Settle & Carlisle route. This was achieved on the 17th June 1967 when hauling the return leg of "The Hadrian Flyer" railtour from Carlisle to King's Cross. D9005 covered the 86.8 miles from Carlisle to Skipton in 72 minutes and 47 seconds and it is believed to be the fastest recorded time ever over the route.

During the week commencing 17th October 1977 unofficial industrial action led to the removal of Deltics from all ECML workings. Action was taken by maintenance staff angry at the proposed closure of Finsbury Park Depot with the introduction of the new HST fleet, which was to be maintained at the new Bounds Green Depot. Maintenance staff 'blacked' the Deltic fleet thus all engines remained 'laid-up' at various installations until the dispute was settled on October 21st.
