55016 (D9016) "GORDON HIGHLANDER" stands in front of the weigh house at Doncaster Works on the 11th April 1976. The locomotive was the first of five Deltics to be given Heavy General Repairs in an attempt to prolong the classes careers, however, the cost of such overhauls was deemed to high and instead the projected life-span of the class was shortened and withdrawals began in late 1979.

horns - later fitted as standard).

1967

07.10.67
Released from Doncaster Works, after General repair, in blue livery and equipped with dual braking (the first to be so treated). Following release 9016 was virtually on air braking test runs from October 1967 until early 1968 - mainly on Heaton-York-Edinburgh-Heaton trips.
03.12.67
Transferred to 34G Finsbury Park (ex 64B Haymarket) - to cover air braked diagrams until completion of dual braking to the fleet.

1968

1969

1970

1971

12.10.71
Released from Doncaster Works, after Light repair, with ETH equipment fitted - the 'D' prefix was dropped from the number at this time.

1974

Locomotive renumbered 55016 w/e 16/03.

1975

05.07.75
To Doncaster Works for Heavy General Repair (off 27.04.76).  This included the plating over of route indicators, sand-box fillers and cab quarter light windows (the first to be so treated).
55016 was the first of the class to be shopped for HGR, however, only four other members would follow as the cost for renewal of inner body-skins and rewiring outweighed the projected future use of the class (in full order: 55016 05.07.75 - 55019 27.02.76
- 55002 16.03.76 - 55021 22.04.76 and 55013 25.05.76). Only 55016 received a 'full' HGR whilst the other four locomotives had work curtailed from the repair in varying degrees. With the scrapping of HGR's the class reverted to Intermediate and Light repairs, although, as another cost-cutting exercise, 55015 was allowed to run without classified repair from October 1975 until February 1979 to ascertain how long the locomotives could run without such work being carried out. The result was that classified repairs were given at two-yearly intervals only from 1979. 55016 only received one further classified repair, a Light, in October 1977.

17.10.77
During the week commencing 17th October 1977 unofficial industrial action led to the removal of Deltics from all ECML workings. Action was taken by maintenance staff angry at the proposed closure of Finsbury Park Depot with the introduction of the new HST fleet, which was to be maintained at the new Bounds Green Depot. Maintenance staff 'blacked' the Deltic fleet thus all engines remained 'laid-up' at various installations until the dispute was settled on October 21st. A list of how the dispute affected the class is as follows:

26.07.79
A report on the condition of 55016 taken at Doncaster Works 16:30 26.07.79 is as follows:

Locomotive awaiting attention at Doncaster Works since 10th January.

Exterior;
The outside is very dirty and covered with oil and 'other things'. The buffer beam equipment is intact.

No.1 Cab;
Assistants sliding window broken and out of runner - forced back into place to 'fill the hole'. The condition of the cab is tidy. The cover to the fuse box has been removed but still present - though one 15 amp fuse is missing. The drivers seat is loose but in place, meanwhile the hot plate pedal is operable but very rusty. Finally the AWS horn relay is missing.

No.1 Nose End & Cubicle;
All seems well in the nose end whilst all equipment is still in the cubicle. One cover is missing from the rear of the cubicle in the engine room.

No.2 Cab;
The drivers side sliding window is cracked and impossible to open and the catch is loose. Once again the AWS horn relay is missing. The drivers side small window wiper has come off and is in the cab.

No.2 Nose End & Cubicle;
As No.1 end.

Engine Room;
The engine room is very dirty and oily. The engine wells are empty with some pipes missing - the boiler is still in place.
26.09.79
Locomotive released from Doncaster Works. Repairs were later sanctioned for 55001, 55004 and 55020 also (all out of service at Doncaster for some considerable time), however, only 55004 would re-enter service as the cost to return it to work was far too great and 55001 and 55020 were condemned and cut-up instead.
07.10.79
Barrow Hill TMD - open day exhibit.
27.10.79
1Zxx Liverpool - Polmadie, "The Deltic Discoverer" LCGB railtour from Leeds (ex 25071 & 25125 - via S&C and Kilmarnock) and 1Zxx Polmadie - Liverpool return to Leeds (via Beattock - 25071 & 25125 forward). After travelling over the GSW route, taking the singled GB&K route north of Kilmarnock, the tour used the Larkfield spur beyond Pollokshields to reach Polmadie where the loco was re-crewed for the run south. A dead stand at Beattock was followed by some vigorous running southwards, around the 90mph mark most of the way to Carlisle, arriving nine minutes early. After re-crewing at Carlisle (with Leeds men) Ais gill was reached in 52 minutes and Skipton in 88.75 minutes for the 86.75 miles, Leeds was reached 27 minutes early where the class 25's were waiting to take over.
