Year Highlights
1962

16.03.62
Ran light from Vulcan Foundry, Newton-le-Willows, to Doncaster Works.
25.03.62
To Vulcan Foundry for unrecorded classification (off 03/04). During this visit D9021 was loaned to the LMR and visited Longsight TMD in late March 1962. The locomotive was used in high-speed trials in connection with rail end stress between Manchester & Crewe. D9021 had no brushes fitted to the traction motors and was towed by an electric locomotive.
From the May 1962 "Modern Railways":
"The last of the production series of 'Deltic' diesels, No. D9021, was at Longsight depot at the end of March. According to a correspondent, it was making nocturnal high speed runs between a pair of 25kV a.c. electric locomotives on the Manchester - Crewe line to test the latter's behaviour at up to 100mph. We were interested to learn recently that the 'Deltic's' performance data shows it to have a better rate of acceleration in the higher speed range than a BR 25kV a.c. electric locomotive."
Followed by July 1962 "Modern Railways":
"A correspondent corrects a note in our May issue concerning the appearance of 'Deltic' No. D9021 on the Crewe - Manchester electrified line. The tests were not connected with the running of the electric locomotives but with comprehensive track tests that have been in progress for some time at Heald Green under the aegis of the B.T.C. Research Department. The 'Deltic', which was completely dead, with motor brushes removed, was being powered by the electric locomotives between which it was coupled for the purposes of rail-end stress tests."

12.11.64
D9021 was considered to be the test loco of the fleet and its on loan transfer from Haymarket to Finsbury Park from 12th November until 19th June 1965 coincided with the ER (Eastern Region) carrying out certain tests for the fleet - the ER brought about the transfer as D9021 was a ScR (Scottish Region) locomotive. There are conflicting dates for this move and  29th November 1964 until 26th June 1965 is also stated as the loan period - this may be due to the source of the transfers (the Eastern Region used to report them week by week, whilst the Scottish Region often used to report for four week periods).

1965

1976

22.04.76
To Doncaster Works for Heavy General Repair (off 19.01.77). This included the plating over of route indicators, sand-box fillers and cab quarter light windows.
55016 was the first of the class to be shopped for HGR, however, only four other members would follow as the cost for renewal of inner and outer body-skins and rewiring outweighed the projected future use of the class (in full order: 55016 05.07.75 - 55019 27.02.76
- 55002 16.03.76 - 55021 22.04.76 and 55013 25.05.76). Only 55016 received a 'full' HGR whilst the other four locomotives had work curtailed from the repair in varying degrees. With the scrapping of HGR's the class reverted to Intermediate and Light repairs, although, as another cost-cutting exercise, 55015 was allowed to run without classified repair from October 1975 until February 1979 to ascertain how long the locomotives could run without such work being carried out. The result was that classified repairs were given at two-yearly intervals only from 1979.

1977

17.10.77
During the week commencing 17th October 1977 unofficial industrial action led to the removal of Deltics from all ECML workings. Action was taken by maintenance staff angry at the proposed closure of Finsbury Park Depot with the introduction of the new HST fleet, which was to be maintained at the new Bounds Green Depot. Maintenance staff 'blacked' the Deltic fleet thus all engines remained 'laid-up' at various installations until the dispute was settled on October 21st. A list of how the dispute affected the class is as follows:
