_________ Power Unit 406 _________

When 9016 "GORDON HIGHLANDER" suffered an exhaust silencer fire at Loughborough on December 3rd 1999, its No. 1 power unit (406) was damaged by the fire brigade by the ingress of foam into the exhaust system. This was to extinguish the deep seated fire in the silencer. Unfortunately, so much foam was used that it travelled back through the exhaust system and into the power unit itself. This led to the unit becoming locked in one position, partly due to water in the cylinders and partly due to corrosion of some pistons from the chemicals in the foam. This resulted in the damaged power unit being taken to MAN B&W Paxman's works at Colchester for rectification.

A full report and extensive photo collection of power unit 406's rebuild can be seen here.

...The completed power unit ready for fitting back into the No.1 end of 9016 "GORDON HIGHLANDER" is seen at MAN B&W Paxman's works at Colchester on January 12th 2002. All that remains to be done to the power unit now is for it to receive a coat of paint...

...A view from the other end of the completed power unit for 9016 at Paxman's Colchester Works on January 12th 2002. The main generator has now been re-united with the power unit after being sent to Norwich for overhaul. This overhaul of the power unit from 9016 marks the most extensive strip down and overhaul of a Deltic power unit in preservation to date...

...The main generator end of the unit, showing both the over hauled main generator and the auxiliary generator, now painted to match the Deltic D18-25B unit itself. It is a long time since any Deltic power unit has been totally overhauled and presented in pristine condition such as this.
