_________ Power Unit 458 _________

1765 - Photo: Bob Peach.

A power unit is seen at the rear of Doncaster Works on the 28th February 1982. It was marked for return to Paxman Diesels, Colchester, and is believed to be the power unit that was sectioned to show internal workings and that which is currently on display at the National Railway Museum, York. It is also believed to be power unit No.458, which last saw use in 55019 (D9019) "ROYAL HIGHLAND FUSILIER"...

...The power unit at York is affixed with serial number plate No.458, though the phasing gear case can be seen stamped as 457 below. Power unit parts were of course interchangeable and it was feasible for one unit to carry the serial numbers of many - employees at Doncaster Works identified power units, with a multitude of stamped serial numbers, for paperwork purposes by referring to the number stamped on the free end of 'C' bank. That is stood facing the unit with the generator to your right and boiler to your left (as in the photo above taken Doncaster Works 28.2.82) I’m informed that the top bank is 'BC' bank and that the number should be stamped on the left-hand end of that block.

For the record the reference is highlighted below in 458's history table...
