By mid 1981 there were already a number of Napier Deltic units consigned to the scrap heap and at least five examples are seen on Sunday 2nd August 1981 at the rear of Doncaster Works.

As of 17.09.81 the following power units were fitted to each locomotive:

...A Napier Deltic power unit, with what appears to be a shattered crankcase cover, lies at the rear of Doncaster Works on the 28th February 1982, also awaiting scrapping is a class 40 and Motorail vehicle...
