_________ Unknown Power Units (anomalies) _________

This project is to try and ascertain which, if any, of the unknown power units fitted to certain locomotives can be deduced from the periods of time units were unaccounted for. It has, however, failed to answer anything conclusively though certain power units can be deemed ‘favourites’ given the time periods and locations where engines were removed and refitted.

Case 1 – D9000 unit fitted from new 28/02/61 and possibly removed Vulcan Foundry 22/06/61:

No conclusions, though only three of twenty-one power units are credited as fitted at Vulcan Foundry – power unit 420 emerging in D9003 02/11/61 and 453 & 454 fitted to D9020 12/02/62.

Case 2 – D9000 No.2 unit fitted RSH 07/03/62 and removed Doncaster 19/12/62:

Only two power units fit the criteria one of which, 456, was removed from D9000 at RSH 02/62 (the same works visit as unknown unit was fitted) and was next used Doncaster 07/03/63.

Case 3 – D9005 No.1 unit fitted from new 25/05/61:

First recorded power unit at No.1 end was 456, possibly fitted during General Repair at Doncaster 04/03/64. Unit changes may have taken place at classified repairs during 01/62 (Light), 05/62 (General), 11/62 (Light), 2/63 (General) and 08/63 (Light). Given the time period a number of power units may have been fitted and as a result twenty-one power units are listed and no favourites can be ascertained – see case 4.

Case 4 – D9005 No.2 unit fitted from new 25/05/61 and removed Doncaster 24/01/62:

Ten power units are listed. The closest date of re-use at Doncaster is P/U 405 on 12/04/62, it is feasible, therefore, that P/U 406 may have been fitted at No.1 end from new and removed at a later classified repair.

Case 5 – D9005 No.2 unit fitted Doncaster 23/02/62 and removed Doncaster 12/02/64:

Only two power units are un-used during this period: 420 05/12/61-27/05/64 & 450 23/11/62-13/02/64. If the same unit was fitted for two years 420 would be favourite as it was un-used for three months following removal – 450 was re-used the day after D9005’s unit was removed.

Case 6 – D9007 No.1 power unit 440 fitted 24/10/67-04/01/68 credited as fitted to D9015 during same period:

Seven power units are listed and all feasible given reasons for removal and time required for repairs prior to fitting to D9007. Favourites must be the numerical 442, 444 & 446 (‘six’ easily mistaken for ‘nought’). See case 8.

Case 7 – D9015 No.1 power unit fitted from new 13/10/61 and removed RSH 25/04/62:

Seven power units are possible – four of which were re-used at RSH: 431, 432, 433 & 448 (442 was fitted at No.2 end). See case 9 & case 10.

Case 8 – D9015 No.2 power unit 440 fitted 11/09/67-22/02/68 credited as fitted to D9007 during same period:

Only two power units fit the time scale, both requiring repairs and both refitted within days. It is firmly believed that P/U 440 was fitted to D9015.

Case 9 – D9017 No.1 power unit fitted from new 10/11/61 and removed RSH 03/62: Update 16/01/16: P/U 445 was fitted but unknown orientation.

Nine power units are listed - four of which were re-used at RSH. See case 7 & case 10.

Case 10 – D9017 No.2 power unit fitted from new 10/11/61 and removed RSH 03/62: Update 16/01/16: P/U 445 was fitted but unknown orientation.

Nine power units are listed - four of which were re-used at RSH. See case 7 & case 9.

Case 11 – A number of power units were removed at one installation and later saw use at another. This presupposes units were transported by rail or road between Vulcan Foundry, RSH Darlington and Doncaster Works. The power units are listed with places/dates for removal and refitting.

Any power unit emerging as a ‘favourite’ is marked in red with an asterisk (*) in the following lists…
