Conclusions: 02.03.78 DME KX states: I am somewhat puzzled at the cause stated by the DME Newcastle unless it is inferred that one of the exhaust systems had been on fire. I would however point out that this locomotive continued to have occasional reports of false fire alarm indications. On 19.02.78 it was found that the boiler flue stack had rusted through and bearing in mind that these casualties were on steam heated trains I am inclined to think that this was the cause of this casualty. This is the first instance of which I am aware of failure of this component in service, but I would point out that this locomotive had not received a Classified Repair to the body since October 1975. |
