1961

28.02.61
Ran light engine from Vulcan Foundry, Newton-Le-Willows, to Doncaster Works - accepted into BR service and allocated 64B, Haymarket TMD, Edinburgh.
10.03.61
Delivery of the Deltic locomotives was heavily delayed due to various factors, however, D9000's introduction was further delayed due to the fitting of an experimental flashing headlight fitted to both ends above the buffer beams. The locomotive was noted with the flashing light on test around the Hadley Wood area on the 10th March whilst running light engine from Finsbury Park to Doncaster. Experiments were however abandoned and the light was later removed during August 1961.
22.03.61
Ran light engine Doncaster to Leith TMD, Edinburgh, for crew training (Haymarket TMD was still undergoing rebuilding).
1962

The date also coincided with the centenary of "The Flying Scotsman" service and D9020 "NIMBUS" was specially prepared by Finsbury Park TMD to haul the centenary Scotsman whilst Haymarket produced D9000 for the up service. D9000 was also named "ROYAL SCOTS GREY" during a ceremony at Edinburgh Waverley, performed by Brigadier J.E. Swetenham D.S.O., Colonel of The Royal Scots Greys, prior to departure.

During the week commencing 17th October 1977 unofficial industrial action led to the removal of Deltics from all ECML workings. Action was taken by maintenance staff angry at the proposed closure of Finsbury Park Depot with the introduction of the new HST fleet, which was to be maintained at the new Bounds Green Depot. Maintenance staff 'blacked' the Deltic fleet thus all engines remained 'laid-up' at various installations until the dispute was settled on October 21st.
