No record of use after 22/11/76 – power unit scrapped

Information regarding five power units which didn't see service after the mid-70's: - 411/431/440/450/456. There is a note in the Deltic locomotive shopping files (held at NRM York) to which these units were last fitted, 55011/005/015/018/018 respectively. The notes are all dated 18/3/81 and state "Deltic power unit 4xx scrap after being stripped for general/intermediate/unclassified repair". There is a price quoted depending on the type of repair, £1883 for an 'Intermediate-B' repair (411/431/450), £2183 for a general overhaul (456), or £2291 for an unclassified (420). (Some of the power units last used in 1980 also have these notes in the file of the Deltic they were last used in.) There is nothing within the P/U's Sub-Commitee Meetings minutes as to why these units were not used again. At this time there was a general shortage of spares coming from Paxman's, in particular crankcases, which had an approximate 18 month lead time. Whether these units were disassembled to provide spares for other units is a possibility, it is suspected that the notes mentioned above were part of an accounting exercise to write-off these units, it is doubtful that they still physically existed as complete units by 1981.
