The Chronicles of Napier has been a labour of love for the past twenty-five years, however, hosting a website is not free
and although the yearly cost may only be approximately £100 it has been thus for its duration (don't tell my wife!).

Driver F Hughes (King's Cross) reports: After
departing from Doncaster, at Decoy, there was
six
or seven bangs which I thought were flashovers.
They all came within seconds - I closed the
controller immediately and coasted until I
stopped at Rossington. I examined No.2 engine
and
found that the main cables from the generator
had fused in the junction box, which was badly
damaged. I closed down the No.2 engine and
requested another ETH locomotive at first

Haymarket TMD.
1E48 20:30 Aberdeen - King's Cross, "The Night Aberdonian"
from Edinburgh to Newcastle (23 minute delay
Newcastle - 9020 forward 10/10).
Casualty report states: loss of power arriving
at Newcastle - GFC2 contactor tips burnt.
30,000 miles since unclassified repair
(03.08.72).
Conclusions: 31.10.72 DME KX states: I would
draw attention to the increased incidence of
failures
of generator field contactors in recent months.
Other casualties have involved locomotive
No.9007
on 17th June, No.9009 on 6th October and No.9020
on 26th June & 29th July. It occurs to me
that
this may be connected with more arduous use to
which they have been put since these locomotives
were converted to electric train heating.
I am therefore instructing my Finsbury Park
Depot to
increase the frequency of examination of these
particular contactors from 'D' to 'C'
examinations.
Perhaps the CM&EE will also investigate the
design aspect. |

delay Newcastle).
Casualty report states: unable to start train.
100,000 miles since last classified repair
(07.01.72).
Conclusions: 24.10.72 DME KX states: The DME
Newcastle advises me that the driver reports
that
the train brake released but was unable to move
forward. 5856 which hauled the train from the
carriage sidings was brake tested satisfactorily.
Driver Hewson (Gateshead) stated later that
after
he coupled 9018 to the train the brake test was
in order but when he applied power the train
would
not move. Train finally moved away before
attention could be given. |

1S14 13:00 King's Cross - Edinburgh, to Berwick
(service terminated).
Casualty report states: dense fumes and fire in
engine room in vicinity of No.2 engine exhaust
drum - No.2 exhaust collector drum large joint
blown out due to stripped studs.
102,640 miles since last classified repair
(07.01.72).
Traction Inspector's report states: The above
train is worked by Gateshead driver J Lough
Newcastle - Edinburgh, Depart Newcastle 17:33,
leaving 13 late on this occasion. On approaching
Berwick (booked stop) smoke was seen to come
from the engine room door, no fire alarm bell
had
sounded. After stopping in platform driver
opened engine room door to find dense smoke and
flames.
Action taken by driver and secondman, after
stopping both engines, was to use fire
extinguishers
from opposing cabs. After fire was extinguished
it was seen that the location of fire was No.2
exhaust
drum, causing damage to flexible water pipes.
After informing Divisional Control of damage it
was
decided to terminate train as the 1S35 14:00
KX-Edinburgh was now awaiting a platform.
No.1
engine was restarted and train moved to Berwick
yard. Heavy water leak noted from header tank so
it was decided to have loco and train hauled to
Edinburgh by ScR loco and crew leaving Gateshead
crew to relieve there intended return working at
Berwick.
Conclusions: 16.11.72 DME KX states: I note that
this locomotive had only just been released
after
'C' examination at Finsbury Park Depot. The
supervisor responsible for the post examination
inspection has been taken up with and instructed
to be more careful in his inspections.

Casualty report states: No.2 engine cut out due
to low coolant - No.4, 6 & 9 hoses leaking at
clipped
connections.
76,000 miles since last classified repair (16.02
73).
Conclusions: 23.08.73 DME KX states: I note the
attention given at Gateshead Depot but would
point out that this locomotive became a casualty
again on its next working - after this second
casualty the locomotive had to be taken out of
traffic for attention to a fractured liner and I
am
inclined to think that this was the cause of the
first casualty. The locomotive should
have received
an 'A' examination at Haymarket Depot.

union connections on driver's brake valve loose
at No.1 end.
93,400 miles since last classified repair
16.02.73).
Conclusions: 14.09.73 DME KX states: The brake
valve concerned had been fitted only two days
earlier - disciplinary action was initiated
against the fitter concerned, however, he left
the service
before this was concluded.

19.09.73 |
1L01 04:00 King's Cross - Leeds,
to Peterborough (47176 forward).
Casualty
report states: intermittent complete loss of
power, regained by closing and opening
controller - connection of internal wire at No.2
engine underspeed switch terminal block
loose - terminal incorrectly fitted between
Paxolin block and nut (instead of between two
nuts.
115,000 miles since last classified repair
(16.02.73).
Conclusion: 23.10.74 DME KX states: Please see
casualty to locomotive 9007 on 06.10.73 which
was also due to defective wiring in an
underspeed switch. This wiring and connections
have always
been a potential source of trouble and in view
of these two casualties I am arranging for a
campaign
check on all locomotives.

118,000 miles since last classified repair
(16.02.73).
Conclusions 26.10.73 DME KX states: On arrival
at King's Cross it was found that the boiler had
a
defective water pump - please see my letter
regarding Spanner Mark II & Mark III boiler
water pump
defects with particular reference to the valve
securing nut split pins. |

127,880 miles since last classified repair
(16.02.73).
Conclusions: 02.11.73 DME KX states: This item
receives attention at 'B' examinations and I
would
normally hold the fitter responsible, however,
on this occasion the last exam was three days
overdue
and it is not possible to take any action
against the individual concerned. |

Casualty report states: brakes hard on.
124,000 miles since last classified repair
(16.02.73) - 114,000 stated.
Conclusions: 20.11.73 DME Doncaster states: With
reference to your letter of 16th November, I am
sorry I am unable to assist you very much in
this matter. So far as your comments re no
advice being
received are concerned, Regional Control were
advised by my Maintenance Controller at 02:45
and
a further discussion took place wherein my staff
were told that the locomotive should work
through
as it was required for further ETH workings.
Some attention was given by my staff to the
boiler on
the locomotive but insufficient time was
available for further examination. |

Casualty report states: boiler not working -
boiler water pump motor commutator blackened due
to incorrect brush spring pressure.
137,000 miles since last classified repair
16.02.73).
Conclusions: 22.11.73 DME KX states: I note the
defect found at York Depot but would point out
that there was a further report of the boiler
water pump being defective two days later.
Further
investigation then revealed that the connection
tag to one of the water pump motor brush arms
was loose. In so far as staff in this
Division are concerned I consider that either
defect should have
been noticed and given attention at the 'C'
examination on 5th November and suitable notice
is
therefore being taken with the electrician
concerned. |

Casualty report states: boiler defective -
boiler water pump not working due to weak spring
tension on motor brushes.
1,000 miles since last classified repair
(14.12.73).
Conclusions: 16.01.74 DME KX states: Please see
previous casualties to this locomotive due to
boiler
water pump motor defects on 05.11.73 & 08.11.73.
I am inclined therefore to think that there has
been
an intermittent defect in this motor for some
time. It has been forwarded for inspection under
'Red Label'
procedure in stores van 756180 leaving Finsbury
Park on 20th December.

- tank topped up at Doncaster.
74,500 miles since last classified repair
(14.12.73).
Conclusions: 03.06.74 DME KX states: This matter
should be taken up with the Driver concerned
regarding whether the boiler water tank was

Casualty report states: Driver examining for
fire after flash and smoke in engine room
- locomotive
forward to King's Cross with ETH off.
90,000 miles since last classified repair
(14.12.73).
Conclusions: 24.06.74 DME KX states: I can only
assume that this casualty was caused by a short
circuit in the heat detection resistor and
rectifier/generator voltage resistor unit.
Finsbury Park TMD.
Repairs - heat detection resistor & rectifier
unit, also generator voltage relay resistor
burnt out,
also slight flashover damage on both main
generators. |

- low coolant & engine aerating (suspect
fractured liner).
114,000 miles since last classified repair
(14.12.73).
Conclusions: 28.08.74 DME KX states: Before this
casualty the engine had been suspect but due to
the fact that no alternative power was available
it was used to work this train with a Technical
Assistant from the Leeds division riding.
Doncaster TMD.

not be traced.
156,000 miles since last classified repair
(14.12.73).
Conclusions: 21.11.74 DME KX states: I regret
that the components removed were not forwarded
for inspection under 'Red Label' procedure.
I would however point out that speedometer
equipment
defects are one of the most prolific cause of
casualties on class 55 locomotives and I would
suggest
that a thorough design investigation would be
well worthwhile.

Casualty report states: No.1 engine cut out -
low coolant level due to hose No.12 leaking &
high
water temperature.
158,160 miles since last classified repair
(14.12.73).
Conclusions: 27.11.74 DME KX states: This
locomotive was subsequently checked in traffic
with
the thermostat bypass valve reverted to its
normal position but it could not be faulted.
I can only
assume therefore that the shut down was due to
loss of coolant rather than high water
temperature
& it would have been interesting to know whether
the driver made any attempt to use the emergency
hand pump. I also note that the
locomotive received an 'A' examination at
Haymarket immediately
prior to working this train. I am
therefore sending a copy of this casualty report
to the Depot
Manager, Haymarket, who may wish to take up with
the staff concerned.

Casualty report states: loss of air pressure -
No.2 end air pipe to brake application unit
fractured.
158,250 miles since last classified repair
(14.12.73).
Conclusions: 10.12.74 DME KX states: I
understand that Main Works are re-positioning
this
particular pipe as locomotives pass through
shops, so as to place it in a less vulnerable
position - this
locomotive had not yet received that attention.
Finsbury Park TMD.
Repairs - air pipe substituted with one from

- low coolant level in header tank.
160,470 miles since last classified repair
(14.12.73).
Conclusions: 05.12.74 DME KX states: This
locomotive was used later to re-engine the 20:40
KX-Edinburgh from Doncaster but became a
casualty at Newcastle with No.1 engine defective.
Reported as B2 conrod fractured, it would be
interesting to know what was found on No.1
engine
strip down, and whether it is thought that there
may have been a defect which could have any
bearing on this first casualty.
Doncaster TMD.
Repairs - No.1 engine coolant system topped up
and checked for air leaks, non found, locomotive
returned to traffic.

TMD.
'A' exam.
1E35 20:20 Edinburgh - King's Cross, to
Peterborough (7 minute delay Peterborough - 1762
forward 14/12).
Casualty report states: No.1 engine high water
temperature (loss of coolant - enginemen used
hand pump from overflow tank but unable to
overcome loss of coolant) - jubilee clips to
distributor pipe stripped thread.
103,500 miles since last classified repair
(10.05.69).
Conclusions: 19.01.70 DME KX states: The
previous 'A' examination of this locomotive had
taken place at Haymarket - perhaps the CM&EE
Scottish Region will therefore investigate the
attention given at this examination. |

Casualty report states: No.1 engine shut down
and would not restart.
114,000 miles since last classified repair
(10.05.69).
Conclusions: 10.02.70 DME KX states: Apart from
a bad history of flashover incidents, of which
there
was no sign on this occasion, I know of nothing
else which would possibly be relevant to this
casualty.

Casualty report states: speedometer not

118,000 miles since last classified repair
(10.05.69).
Conclusions: 17.02.70 DME KX states: This
locomotive had been released from Finsbury Park
Depot
and it was in running light to King's Cross that
the driver reported the speedometer defective -
subsequent
inspection and testing at Finsbury Park plus a
Technical Inspector riding on the locomotive in
service
failed to show up any defect.

Casualty report states: No.1 engine shut down
after passing Grantham & No.2 shut down at
Egmanton - upon trying to restart engines both
motored but would not fire.
8,250 miles since last classified repair
(14.02.70) - 8,600 stated.
Conclusions: 24.03.70 DME KX states: I
understand that the CM&EE's representative Mr
Wells and
the EE's representative Mr Baker gave attention
to this casualty and after resetting the
overspeed trip
of No.2 engine, they were able to get both
engines restarted and that the locomotive
proceeded without
further trouble. There has been no possible
cause yet ascertained for this casualty and the
locomotive
is still being kept under observation.
Haymarket TMD.
1E48 20:30 Aberdeen - King's Cross "The Aberdonian"
from Edinburgh to Newcastle (11 minute delay
Alnmouth - 1574 forward from Newcastle 07/03).
Casualty report states: defective boiler -
photo cell out of position and broken.
8,600 miles since last classified repair
(14.02.70) - 8,250 stated.
Conclusions: 14.04.70 DME KX states: The
previous maintenance to the photo cell was at
Finsbury
Park and the locomotive then worked to Newcastle
and back and King's Cross to Edinburgh before
failing on the return journey from Edinburgh. I
am satisfied that the boiler was in working
order before
leaving Finsbury Park. The fact that the DME
Newcastle states the cell was out of position
and broken
suggests maltreatment, probably by the footplate
staff and I am therefore coding this casualty as
non-mechanical. |

1S60 19:40 King's Cross - Aberdeen "The Aberdonian"
to Newcastle (delayed Hett Mill - 1765 forward).
Casualty report states: loss of power - No.1
& No.2 main generators and No.6 traction motor
flashed over.
28,300 miles since last classified repair
(14.02.70).
Conclusions: 06.05.70 DME KX states: In the
absence of information from the DME Newcastle to
the contrary I assume that the brushes in No.6
traction motor were not below the minimum length
and there was no apparent cause for the
flashover. As far as I am aware this is an
isolated instance
in this particular locomotive since its

1E05 10:00 Edinburgh - King's Cross, "The Flying Scotsman"
to Doncaster (16 minute delay Doncaster - 1580
forward).
Casualty report states: No.1 engine continually
shutting down (suspect fuel starvation - fuel
pipe
drawing air through slack joints.
43,603 miles since last classified repair
(14.02.70).
Conclusions: 08.06.70 DME KX states: Over the
period of the last three months there have been
several reports of this engine shutting down in
service. I note cause and repairs stated by the
DME
Doncaster but am not completely satisfied that
these would explain the symptoms experienced.
Also I would point out that the locomotive has
been accompanied in service by Technical staff
including the CM&EE's Chief Inspector on a
number of occasions but has behaved perfectly.
If the fuel system were drawing air I would
expect some indication of the engine and racks
hunting.
The locomotive is still being kept under
observation.

Repairs - fuel pipe joints taken up on pipe from
tank to pump, engine tested and nothing further
found wrong. |

Casualty report states:
No.1 engine defective - breathing badly.
69,985 miles since last classified repair
(14.02.70).
Conclusions: 22.07.70 DME KX states: This
locomotive was shop proposed 29.06.70 for this
defect,
but a request was made for the locomotive to be
kept in service and was finally called to works
09.07.70.
In view of this I consider the casualty should

Casualty report states:
Boiler locked out - photo electric cell glass dirty.
70,541 miles since last classified repair
(14.02.70).
Conclusions: 10.08.70 DME KX states: This
locomotive received a 'C' examination on the day
after
this casualty at which it was found that the
boiler tubes were more heavily coated than
normal.
I therefore conclude that combustion conditions
were not entirely satisfactory and that this
caused
the photo electric cell glass to become dirty.
As the locomotive was two days overdue a 'C'
examination at the time of the casualty I am
coding this as 'E'. |

Casualty report states:
No.2 engine overspeed tripping - Martinair overspeed cylinder defective.
78,103 miles since last classified repair
(14.02.70).
Conclusions: 13.08.70 DME KX states: I
understand that the Martinair unit which failed
had itself
only been fitted the day previous. I am
advised by the DME Newcastle that it was
forwarded to
Doncaster Works under the 'Red Label' procedure.
Doncaster TMD.

leaking at Jubilee Clip.
82,325 miles since last classified repair
(14.02.70).
Conclusions: 26.08.70 DME KX states: The
driver's booking stated that when No.1 engine
shut down
coolant was pumped up from the overflow tank but
the engine only ran for 15 minutes before
shutting
down again. In view of the fact that the
locomotive had only just received an 'A'
examination at
Gateshead Depot perhaps the DME Newcastle will
wish to investigate the attention given.

causing loss of coolant.

(11.07.70) - 85,985 since classified repair
(14.02.70).
Conclusions: 05.10.70 DME KX states: There have
been several instances recently of split coolant
header tanks on this class of locomotive and the
matter will be kept under review to advise the
CM&EE if any action is thought to be called for.

understand from the DME Doncaster that following
this
casualty this casualty the locomotive was
examined and accompanied by representatives of
the
CM&EE at York, who as far as I am aware could
not fault it. However, this locomotive
has a long

electrical rather than cooling system trouble.

110,630 miles since last classified repair
(14.02.70).
Conclusions: 06.11.70 DME KX states: I
understand that three auxiliary earth faults,
two in the
cabling and one in the cab heaters were found
and cleaned by Works staff. Such earth
faults are
by no means uncommon on this class of locomotive
and the deterioration of this equipment with
age should be kept under review to ascertain
what attention is desirable at Main Works
overhauls.

defective boiler - boiler water pump not maintaining supply
(nuts detached
from inlet
valves
and which subsequently fouled them).
112,970 miles since last classified repair
(14.02.70).
Conclusions: 20.11.70 DME KX states: Cause
believed to be corrosion of the nut split pins
which
came out of position allowing the nuts to
unscrew - this is presumably a case of
unsatisfactory spilt
pins being fitted to these valves at some time,
as I understand that these pins should be of
stainless steel.

117,500 miles since last classified repair
(14.02.70).
Conclusions: 03.12.70 DME KX states: The high

concern. This has badly affected both
reliability
and availability. |

Locomotive taken out of traffic - awaiting works
attention.
Shopping proposal states: persistent wheelslip
faults.
6D60 19:34 Temple Mills - Doncaster, from
Hornsey (77 minute delay Hornsey - 5824
forward).
Casualty report states: cab lights going out
when indicator lights switched on.
6,320 miles since last classified repair
(25.02.71).
Conclusions: 21.04.71 DME KX states: At the time
of this casualty the locomotive was being
returned to Works for rectification due to
persistent false wheelslip indication.
Following the
casualty examination at Finsbury Park Depot
revealed that the lighting circuits also
required
attention and this was added to the shopping
proposal. Please see my letter of

King's
Cross Loco.
Stopped 06:05 - 'A' exam, to traffic 08:05.
1L05 08:20 King's Cross - Leeds (16 minute delay
King's Cross - 1541 forward).
Casualty report states: defective boiler - 30
amp fuse blown.
Driver H Foster (King's Cross) reports that the
16 minute delay was caused by failure of loco on 1L03
07:55 King's Cross - Bradford, his allocated
loco for 1L05 was taken for 1L03 and 9018
allocated to
1L05. However, boiler failed to function
and fitters called for attention - fitters
failed 9018 and a
third engine was provided in the form of 1541.
Conclusions: 23.04.71 DME KX states: As there
was a spare fuse on the loco it is considered
this
should have been fitted and the casualty
avoided. The driver states the loco was failed
by the fitters
and not himself - Mr Page & Mr Tumbridge to
investigate further please.
King's Cross Loco.
Repairs - boiler fuse renewed. |

(loose wire in feed regulator Mobrey
plug connection - grub screw slackened off).
Conclusions: 26.04.71 DME KX states: I can only
assume that the grub screw had not been
satisfactorily tightened after the last

'LD 125' exam - to traffic 03:30.
1N25 17:00 King's Cross - Newcastle, "The Tees-Tyne Pullman"
to York (9 minute delay York - 1839 forward).
Casualty report states: No.1 engine cut out -
high water temperature.
19,990 miles since last classified repair
(25.02.71).
Conclusions: 09.08.71 DME KX states: This
locomotive had been released from Doncaster
Works
after No.1 power unit change the previous day -
a check and its subsequent history shows further
intermittent reports of high water temperature
No.1 engine. It was checked in service
and found
that No.1 engine governor was defective giving
excess power at lower than designed maximum
engine speed. This was changed 30.07.71 and sent
for inspection under the 'Red Label' procedure.
Since that date there have been no further
reports of high water temperature.
York TMD.
Repairs - water & oil checked, fan clutches
checked, loco could not be faulted. |

Repairs.
1L34 17:30 King's Cross - Bradford, to
Peterborough (65 minute delay Welwyn and 10
minute at Peterborough - assisted on
rear from Welwyn by unknown loco, 5623 assist
from Langley to Peterborough, 1766 forward).
Casualty report states: CCB tripped and
unable to reset - No.1 engine governor engine
run
solenoid burnt out.
Driver J Cox (King's Cross) reports: The train
was running normal until it reached Hatfield
where
I had the distant 'ON' for Welwyn GC and Welwyn
North. As I was about to start braking the
brakes
went on and I stopped just short of Welwyn GC
starter. As I could hear air escaping in
the nose I got
out and examined the pipes, thinking that I had
struck something or the communication cord had
been pulled. Everything was alright but
getting back into the cab I found that the
engine had stopped.
I sent the secondman to the phone and found the
CCB had tripped. Control had arranged for
an
assistant engine and it came on the back and we
departed at 18:37. At Langley 5623 came
on the
front and rear loco was removed. 5623 & 9018
were removed at Peterborough and 1766 came on.

Casualty report states: loss of power - No.1
engine load regulator contacts 23 & 30 welded in
and
8 others burned.
6,410 miles since last works visit (18.10.71).
Conclusions: 22.12.71 DME KX states: This is an
all too frequent trouble with this class of
locomotive and for this reason I cannot place
any definitive blame on the electrician who
carried
out the examination two weeks previously.
Special instructions were issued on 22.11.71 for
the
load regulator tip settings and clearances to be
checked on 'B' examinations and orders have now
been placed by Finsbury Park for the gauges and
tools to do this properly.
