"ST. PADDY"
Bloodline & Family Tree::

St. Paddy, a bay stallion, was the third of the Deltic racehorses to be owned by Sir Victor Sassoon, and the most recent of all the eight. He was foaled in 1957 by Aureole out of Edie Kelly. In 1960 St. Paddy won the Derby (ridden by Lester Piggott at odds of 7-1), St. Leger, 2000 Guineas, Eclipse Stakes and the Hardwick Stakes, an impressive record indeed. Included in St. Paddy's pedigree is Gainsborough, himself a classic winner in 1918, he can be traced back in six of the Deltic racehorses (not Pinza or Nimbus) and is in the blood line of most of today's thoroughbred racehorses. St. Paddy sired Connaught, the 1970 Eclipse Stakes winner. Whilst two other noteworthy classic winning thoroughbreds from St. Paddy's blood line are; Dunfermline (1977 Oaks and St. Leger); and Pebbles (1984 1000 Guineas and 1985 Eclipse Stakes). Dunfermline is also a descendant of Ballymoss and Pebbles from the blood line of Crepello.

1977

17.10.77
During the week commencing 17th October 1977 unofficial industrial action led to the removal of Deltics from all ECML workings. Action was taken by maintenance staff angry at the proposed closure of Finsbury Park Depot with the introduction of the new HST fleet, which was to be maintained at the new Bounds Green Depot. Maintenance staff 'blacked' the Deltic fleet thus all engines remained 'laid-up' at various installations until the dispute was settled on October 21st. A list of how the dispute affected the class is as follows:

March 1979
A report on the condition of 55001 taken during March 1979 is as follows:

55001: Doncaster Works since 24.03.78.

Exterior;
The paint work is very dull and dirty all traces of gloss gone, with paint from the yellow nose ends peeling off. Air/vac/steam heating hoses are missing. No1 end radiator/fan housing has been stripped, also one fuel tank each side has been removed. No.2 end extinguisher cord glass is broken.

Interior (No.1 end);
Both cab doors stiff and always open. The seat frames are still in place but covers and backs are missing. The covers on both train brake controller and master controllers are missing, as is the bulb and cover for the ETH 'on' indicator and knob for the hotplate. The nose end appears OK. In the cubicle there are two covers, two contacts (off No.1 load regulator) and the AWS horn relay missing.

Interior (No.2 end);
Again both cab doors are stiff, the handle has been removed from the right hand door. Rest as No1 end except; three contacts on No.2 load regulator, various fuses and six cubicle covers are missing. The brake overcharge button is also missing. Nose end is OK.

Engine Room;
Rear of No.2 cubicle; 2 arc chutes, cover off cubicle, warning lights and seven covers missing. The unit well is full of oily waste. The Spanner Mk II 'Swirlyflow' steam heating boiler is still in place as is the AWS equipment.

27.10.79
The late Ray Smith, chairman of the Deltic Preservation Society, announces that repairs to 55001, 55004 and 55020 have been sanctioned whilst undertaking the DPS annual general meeting. Repairs were to be given to 55004 first with 55001 and 55020 following in that order. Unfortunately due to the cost of getting 55004 up and running and given the time span the class as a whole had remaining, a decision was taken at the highest level, that both 55001 and 55020 would be stripped for spares and cut up.
18.12.79
Locomotive withdrawn from ER operating stock.

1980

05.01.80
Locomotive officially withdrawn -  Miles achieved 2,690,000 with 6,890 days in service.
